Ep 54 Skill Zero: Using Your Internal Compass

There are a lot of skills and strategies and tactics for navigating our lives, and a lot of people and programs and groups who are itching to have you adopt their way of doing things.

But the most important, but overlooked and neglected skill we can develop is the ability to think and judge for ourselves.

If we want to make the most of our lives, and have lasting fulfillment in our personal and professional world, we have to make the conscious choice to evaluate what is real and trustworthy and of value to us. We cannot simply let someone else decide our beliefs and dictate or force our chosen direction for us.

We cannot forget to rely on what is within us to do this. Yes there are all sorts of technologies and voices and opinions and reports and statistics and reviews that can act as evidence of what is being claimed to be good and true and real, but its all worthless if we can’t learn to take all of it and use the innate human capability to discern and make our own judgement calls on things, based on the evidence available to us.

Two steps:

  1. Be aware that every human has this unique gift of an internal compass.
  2. Pay attention to how yours works, and practice keeping it calibrated and in tune. (Usually a combination of feelings, physiology, and seeking good information)

Ep 53 The Fulfillment Formula

This episode contains a lot of explanation of the process taken by yours truly over the last year for finding the key elements of fulfillment which is helpful in its own right, but feel free to skip ahead to about minute 23:00 if you just want the formula. Also below are the main takeaways.

  1. Learn to better follow your own internal compass, and don’t follow anything blindly. Be the judge and jury and cross-examine any advice or solutions you hear from others including this podcast.
  2. The question that comes before all goals and action “What do I want, and Why?”
  3. To get to the essence of something that seems complicated, be like a kid and keep asking “But Why?”
  4. The Formula for lasting fulfillment: Fulfillment = Quality (Growth x Enjoyment x Connection)

Ep 52 Its All Been Done, But Never By You

The perspective you need to keep to do your life’s work.

So many people never take action because they are overly focused on things like whether someone is already doing that, or its old news, or there is too much competition in that saturated market to even try it now.

There are books written about how to stop swimming with the sharks where there is blood in the water and create your own blue ocean strategy.

Its all about how can we differentiate our product and stay ahead. Well if you are the product and everything you do has your signature and style attached to it, then it will always be one of a kind in a blue ocean.

There are countless real estate agents, and businesses online, and coaches, and insurance agents, and all sorts of things, but people are starting new careers and businesses in these spaces every single day and they are still succeeding. They are not losing or failing because of sameness. The ones that last are consistent in bringing their unique selves and lived experiences to how they do it, and they do it because they enjoy it.

Ep 51 Awkwardness and Rejection are Signs of Growth

Are you avoiding something because you could be rejected or it could lead to awkwardness? In this episode we flip the script and discuss how those things are actually not your enemy but the very thing that you should have more of if you are not progressing in the way you want to be. We share the big five benefits of experiencing awkwardness and rejection and their role in growth and fulfillment.

Ep 50 Expect Opposition, Resistance, and Setbacks

Its natural to get frustrated when you have a well developed plan and a good cause and things seem to come from every angle to get in your way, slow you down, and throw you off. This episode is a real life lesson on what was standing in the way of getting this podcast to the episode 50 milestone, and how to be more ready for that to happen whenever you really go for it. We can learn to expect it, and be prepared with a simpler plan and a clear response when it shows up.

Its not a very exciting game or eventful life if there is not some form of going backwards included.

Sometimes you just need a simple first step to get pointed in the right direction and get back on track.

Ep 49 Stop Building Life Upside Down

What I have seen through personal experience, inspiration, and lots of conversations, observations, and research is that the number one cause of malaise, or chaos and a life out of sync is building it unknowingly upside down.

Its not a debate that hard work, and money, and drive, and goals are a necessary ingredient, its just that they cannot hold up the weightier things that really matter in life.

The base of the pyramid (self development, people, family, connection, health, faith, belief, attitude, mindset) must always be kept as first priority and kept in alignment or the next layer of the pyramid (hard work, ambition, money, growth, and advancement) will always buckle under the weight, because its meaning can never be big enough to make a proper base. And the meaning of other things can never be small enough to be left for last.

Its not idealist. Its practical. Why would you build something so you can be stressed about it falling down all the time?

If you are exhausted and overwhelmed from not having enough hands, and holding up an upside down pyramid, its time to get some helping hands and support and tactics to bring the right pieces to the right places, and fix the structure, so it supports itself.

Ep 48 Doing All The Right Things, Still Feeling Wrong?

This episode tells the story of the walking wounded in mind and spirit. Putting in a valiant effort, and never giving up. Getting results, and progress, but feeling unfulfilled and trapped with no understanding why.

Trying to help others in worse condition, but ignoring their own, expecting it to resolve itself.

Feeling like as long as we do our duty, serve, and keep others happy, our seemingly insignificant wounds will be just battle scars.

Except the mind and heart and spirit know the truth.

I share my expedition through this dense jungle of confusion and how I found my way out, with some help.

Enjoy!

Ep 46 Get In the Game, Stay In the Game

One question that is really easy to overthink. Where do I start?

What are the right steps to take after that?

We won’t do a lot of things because we are not sure where to begin, or where its going to lead, or why its better than where we already are.

People like to say control what you can control and don’t worry about what you can’t. But then that starts another analysis. What can I control? What can’t I control? Am I sure about either one. And around and round we go.

And we have not taken any action while we are trying to find the best plan, strategy, or jumping off point.

Meanwhile we are not getting any younger.

Break that progress defeating thought loop with this alternative:

If you want something, then there are two steps.

1. Get in game.

2. Stay in the game.

# 45 No More Slow Freight

I just had to share one more powerful principle from the book I recently read called “The Power of Truth” written in 1902 by the author, William George Jordan.

The chapter I pulled the quotes from in this one is entitled “The Things That Come Too Late”. It has everything to do with how we have the power now to make them not too late.

In this case its about not being quick with condemnation and slow with commendation. If you have admiration, love, or gratitude toward someone. Show it, speak it, prove it with your actions. Don’t assume they already know it, or don’t need to hear it to feel it.

Please rate the show on your podcast player page if you are enjoying it. It helps more amazing people like you find it more easily in the sea of options.
