Ep 63 Lets Pretend It Is Just Me

Wayfirelabs.com

It is not just you, but what if it was? How would that change your approach? How would that change what you do and say?

This thought experiment is uncomfortable, especially if you take it beyond thought and put it into action in real life even for a week.

Because life is not fair. And its too bad that some people never feel the need to make it right, until it catches up with them. But…

I dare you to just feed your curiosity here, and see what happens. You don’t have to enable anyone else’s bad behavior or unfair treatment of you, by saying out loud that its just you that needs to change. No one has to know you are taking this idea for a ride. Just play pretend if you have to. Stop keeping score, like really stop, and if you hate it, then don’t worry. You can say it was just Nate.

Thanks for listening. More points if you sincerely try it.

Ep 62 Shorten The Resilience Gap

Wayfirelabs.com

Habits and Discipline are powerful. But Resilience is what shows up when they don’t.

Discipline and Habits are designed to help you be committed and automatic and consistent, so you never miss. But they are also a major source of discouragement when life grabs you by the face and says “What now tough guy?”

Resilience is not just about getting up every-time you fall down.

It is that too, but this year I learned a better way to build it.

Enjoy

Ep 60 Footholds of Connection Part 4 of 5

This foothold of connection is all about friendship. The most underrated and untapped superpower on the planet.

This is a wake up call to everyone but especially to people in the “middle”, age 30-55. Moms, and even more so, Dads, need to wake up and realize they will be better parents and spouses if they decide to get better at having real lifelong friends. Its the bedrock of community, and we pretended it wasn’t necessary.

Enough with the rationalizations and excuses and fears and overthinking. Just call the friends you have, or used to have, or if you want to make new ones, go do stuff that you enjoy, and you will connect with the real people who let you relax and be your real self, and who will be there with you regardless of how good or bad you have it at any point in your timeline. Its not you that you are not likable. Its not that you are tired. Its not that you are too busy with too many other responsibilities. Its that you forgot that life can’t function properly without friends.

When you are ready to actually make that thing happen that you just can’t seem to get moving in your life or business go to changewithnate.com and we will kick some doors in together. Stop waiting. Giddyup.

Ep 59 Footholds of Connection Part 3 of 5

In foothold number three of five we talk about identifying what a team is vs just a group of people working on the same goal. Hint, the difference is trust and connection.

A team comes in a lot of different shapes and sizes and is found in a lot of different settings, but we have to take stock of what teams we have and which people we want to have on them to build with us.

Enjoy!

Ep 57 Footholds of Connection Part 1 of 5

We are starved for human connection, but we don’t realize how badly our acceptance of its convincing substitutes are affecting our fulfillment.

There is a great fishing analogy in this one.

In this episode we focus on the pre-requisite for bring back better quality of true lasting and growing human connection. The connection that has to be strongest first is the one you have with yourself. The challenge is to ask yourself the following questions and write down your honest answers at this point in time, so you can lay the groundwork for all your other relationships. Don’t be passive and casual with your curiosity. Actually think about the questions and answer them, or you are just consuming more information, and doing nothing with it.

List included below for convenience and quick reference.

How connected am I to myself?

How do I feel about my life right now?

How do I feel about what is possible for me or what I am capable of?

What do I spend most of my time thinking about?

What do I spend most of my time doing?

What do I say when I talk to myself? and  How is that helping me?

What do I believe about my best self?

How do I spend most of my time feeling?

How do I feel about myself?

(What do I like, or what do I wish was different?)

Do I know what I want most for myself?

Do I know why I want that?

Do I feel guilty or selfish even asking that question?

What am I doing that lines up with that desire?

Am I doing it for the right reasons, and do I enjoy doing it?

What is the simplest, easiest, thing I can do before tomorrow,  to get even the tiniest bit of progress in  better understanding myself, trusting myself, caring for and showing more appreciation for myself?

Do I believe that I have to know myself better, and love and care for myself now, or is that something for another day after I have taken care of everything and everyone else well enough?

Does that show up in my thoughts, words, and actions every day?

Does my life feel like a life of obligation and duty to others, or am I conciously choosing my own expectations and deciding what commitments I want to make?

Do I feel any fear, hesitancy, discomfort, or pride that keeps me from spending time connecting with others in any category?

Do I know what or who is holding me back?

Have I considered how changing myself would help?

Do I feel limited by my circumstances or others’ thoughts about me?

Do I believe better possibilities, options, and scenarios, may exist that I have not yet discovered?

What one thing do I want to change most in my life?

What is the smallest thing I could do today, that would have the biggest impact on that?

Ep 54 Skill Zero: Using Your Internal Compass

There are a lot of skills and strategies and tactics for navigating our lives, and a lot of people and programs and groups who are itching to have you adopt their way of doing things.

But the most important, but overlooked and neglected skill we can develop is the ability to think and judge for ourselves.

If we want to make the most of our lives, and have lasting fulfillment in our personal and professional world, we have to make the conscious choice to evaluate what is real and trustworthy and of value to us. We cannot simply let someone else decide our beliefs and dictate or force our chosen direction for us.

We cannot forget to rely on what is within us to do this. Yes there are all sorts of technologies and voices and opinions and reports and statistics and reviews that can act as evidence of what is being claimed to be good and true and real, but its all worthless if we can’t learn to take all of it and use the innate human capability to discern and make our own judgement calls on things, based on the evidence available to us.

Two steps:

  1. Be aware that every human has this unique gift of an internal compass.
  2. Pay attention to how yours works, and practice keeping it calibrated and in tune. (Usually a combination of feelings, physiology, and seeking good information)
